It’s all rubbish…

DSC01095.jpg

At least once a year I do a week of not buying a single bit of plastic. That means no fruits wrapped in plastic, no crisps, no chocolate (that’s the real kicker)…no bread which comes in a plastic wrapping. I started doing this in 2018, as a way to manage my plastic use, to pause and reflect on how much poly-madness I easily consume in a week. Trust me, it’s not easy.

Everything is covered in plastic!

Sustainability is much bigger than this though.

Reduce, reuse, recycle - is the phrase that is so common. Reduce your intake, reuse what you can, and for anything that can’t be reduced, or reused, recycle it.

When you put your rubbish in the recycling bin - what happens next? Where does it go?

These questions often don’t concern us because we assume if it’s going in recycling, someone else will be sorting it out. Out of sight, out of mind. Right?

Wrong. It’s something we should think about.

According to the Guardian:
”Westminster council sent 82% of all household waste – including that put in recycling bins – for incineration in 2017/18”

I don’t imagine Westminster council is the only council to have done this. So where does your waste go? Does it get incinerated? Does it get shipped to another country, and does it get dumped? If it does get recycled who is going through it - who is sorting it?

This week let’s reduce our plastic consumption. Throughout the week we’ll be sharing our tips and tricks and a list of London based bulk buying shops over on instagram.
